The Flame and the Drop of Water Taekwondo is about balance. Fire symbolizes roughness, strength, power, courage and intensity. It is the flame of our competitiveness, the heat from our soul, the drive that keeps us going. It is the side of us that wants to go into battle, to face challenges head on, to reach for our goals, and to prove to ourselves that we are winners. The drop of water symbolizes self-control, logic, and knowledge. The side of us that wants peace, the side that accepts ourselves as who we are. Also, the flame forms the letters DSA - the initials of the founder of our club. Yin and Yang The Yin - yang is the symbol of the interplay of forces in the universe. In Chinese philosophy, yin and yang represent the two primal cosmic forces in the universe. Yin (moon) is the receptive, passive, cold female force. Yang (sun) is masculine- force, movement, heat. The Yin Yang symbol represents the idealized harmony of these forces. Taekwondo is about the harmony of the soft and hard aspects of our being. The Colors White, Yellow, Blue and Red, as well as the three stars, pays homage to Mr. Andaya's country of origin, the Philippines. These are also colors found in the ITF belt/ranking system. The Korean characters are the words "Tae Kwon-Do" . They are written in Korean to symbolize our respect to the origins of our discipline as well as to its founder, General Choi Hong Hi. | |||
